Money Saving Tips

Shopping Calendar: The Most Affordable Time of the Year to Buy Everything

Shopping Discounts

We are fully aware that the United States of America is the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, yet most Americans, including the families, making more than $100,000 annually, struggle to cough up $1,000 in case of emergency.

Not having enough money to cover for the necessities is rarely the cause of an empty savings account. It’s rather that we don’t usually think enough about how we spend our hard-earned money.

Don’t just take my word for it. 6 in 10 Americans state that the most common reason for their credit card debt is buying unnecessary things they can’t afford.

Here’s the thing – you can buy everything you ever wanted without rearing a hole in your bank account. All you have to do is think twice about your purchasing decisions, particularly where and when to buy stuff, because every month has its own Black Fridays!

January

Sports Gear Deals

You’ve probably made your New Year’s resolutions. So have your friends, neighbors, and literally everyone else.

So have the gym owners, and sports equipment manufactures.

  • Gym memberships. Gym membership and sports gear deals are designed to catch as many people willing to reshape their body in 2019 as possible. So, they battle one another in an endless warfare of discounts and offers aimed at attracting your attention. Little do they know that you’re the only one winning at this game.
  • Houses. A house, of all things, will cost way less if you choose to buy one in January. Homes cost nearly 9% less now.
  • Wedding dresses. The holiday season causes a boom in the number of proposals under the charming mistletoe twigs. The wedding industry took notice of this some time ago and they are knowingly dropping prices on wedding dresses to increase their sales.
  • Bedding & towels. Bedding and towels are much cheaper in January – the month of White Sales.

February

Valentines Day Deals

February is one of the best months of the year when it comes to discount hunting. That said, many deals and offers carry over to February. Moreover, the month has several treats of its own, mostly because of all the 2 for 1 St. Valentine’s deals.

What exactly are we looking at?

  • Smartphones and accessories. Major retailers tend to offer sweet 2 for 1 deals for St. Valentine’s day.
  • Chocolates and sweets. Speaking of the devil, treats of all shapes and sizes “drop a few pounds” after St. Valentine’s day.
  • Computers and consumer electronics. Black Friday deals and Christmas sales are long gone, but there is a lot of leftover tech roaming the shelves of stores and warehouses. To top things off, new gadgets and electronics have been announced throughout a multitude of tech events in January (such as CES®). This makes it an excellent time to still get a good deal on some of the best monitors, laptops, and other hardware, as manufacturers are lowering prices to sell what’s left of the old inventory while restocking on the current year’s tech.
  • Winter clothes. Another thing that’s cheap as air in February are the winter clothes. If I recall correctly, Walmart knocked down the prices of women’s coats to $8 last year. Same can be said about Amazon, and Macy’s.

Pro tip: February is the month of the Super Bowl so expect a series of amazing offers to complement the amazing ball games..

March

S. Patrick's Day Deals

Ah, the first days of the long-awaited spring. Mother Nature is waking up from her beauty sleep, the birds are back from their trip to wherever birds fly off to, and we are all happily welcoming the delightful warmth of the sun. Everything seems to praise the upcoming blossoming.

Everything but good shopping deals. They stay ice-cold, at least for the time being.

  • Frozen foods and yogurt. March is the unofficial frozen food month. Farm Rich, Safeway, Dole, and Green Giant are all known for an impressive lineup of discounts from the freezer. Check them out and stock up!
  • Air conditioning. Better get one now, because these Freon-filled man’s best “summer friend” will jump up in price at the first signs of clear weather.
  • Grills. Isn’t there anything warm-ish on sale? Well, now that you’ve mentioned it, grills are usually the cheapest at the beginning of spring so if you are planning on hosting barbeques later this season, now’s the perfect time to stock up.
  • Color green. St. Patrick’s day brings out the desire to rock something green in everyone. Major retailers have picked this trend up long ago, and are now offering some amazing St. Patrick’s day discounts on the “green stuff”… and beer.
  • Luggage. Luggage manufacturers prepare for summer in advance. That’s why they release their new collections in March while dropping the prices on last year’s models.

April

Easter Deals

Proceed to all news, discounts and offers carefully. Who knows which ones will end up being an April Fools’ joke.

  • All things bunnies and chocolate. April = Easter. It’s as simple as that.
  • Tax Day-themed products. Sadly, April is not all egg hunts and chocolate. It’s also the month of the ever so dreaded Tax Day. Many businesses have picked it up as an effective date to market their anti-stress products so expect discounts on everything from rubber balls to massage chairs.
  • Vacuum cleaners. Yes, the discounts won’t go as far as they did during Black Friday, but they are more than enough to pull you through the chore-filled Spring Cleaning days with discounts on vacuums and home care products.
  • Green electronics. Earth day is one of the most prominent and significant holidays in April, and it comes packed with discounts on eco-friendly products all over the US. But wait, you can save even more money by following our go green tips
  • Cruises. April is one of the best months in the year to plan a trip and make the necessary bookings before the vacation fever kicks in.

May

Mattresses Deals

May is the month of Memorial Day deals, true, but it is also much more in shopping terms. There are also Mother’s Day offers, amazing sports gear discounts, and even for the new kid on the block – Star Wars Day deals.

  • Spring clothes. The season’s almost over so retailers are as eager as ever to make space for the summer collections. And those of us who realized that spring and autumn clothes aren’t that different will be more than willing to get them on discount.
  • Kitchen appliances. All of us would like to make our mother’s day simpler. Luckily, there are literally myriads of kitchen gadgets for slicing, dicing, and cleaning out there. All with a special holiday discount.
  • Mattresses. May brings in an increased selection of memory foam-filled bad boys. Pair that with the coupons of all the major retailers like Home Depot, or Macy’s given away for Memorial Day, and you’ll be able to save up to 50% on a mattress.
  • Indoor and patio furniture. Memorial Day is one of the biggest sales events of the year. Some of the deals are on pare with Black Friday discounts, especially if it is the furniture you are looking for.

June

Power Tools Deals

June brings in the Father’s Day hype dropping in price every manly-man thing from a saw to a flamethrower.

  • Tools. Father’s Day gifts and power tools have traditionally walked hand in hand together. The forecasts predict no changes this year.
  • Dishware. Statistically speaking, June is the peak of the wedding season. While it’s a great thing to be invited to an open-air party, several weddings in a row will inevitably put a dent in anyone’s gift budget. Luckily most brands have picked up on the trend by now. Therefore, they offer amazing deals on one of the most popular wedding present – dinnerware.
  • Gym memberships. Summer is finally here, but dat bod isn’t for most people. Luckily, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. You can get back in shape and save up to 50% on it in June.

July

Jewelry Deals

July is an interesting month. On one hand, it is packed to the brim with amazing shopping days like the 4th of July or Amazon Prime day, and on the other, it is very sensitive to timing.

Summer apparel, for once, is best bought at the beginning of July simply because it has been on sale since May which is the equivalent of the Middle Ages in “retail years”. You can get cheap school supplies at the end of the month, just before the Back to School hype.

So what does anyone buy and when?

  • Paint & home decor. Paint is super cheap at the beginning of July so if you feel like your bedroom needs a retouch, now is as good a time (and weather) as ever.
  • Amazon deals. Amazon Prime Day, the uncrowned jewel in July’s shopping crown takes place in the middle of the month and some of the offered deals will be hotter than even the Black Friday offers. Make sure to use our Amazon Discount Search tool for year-round savings!
  • Laptops. You can find a great bargain if you are shopping for a laptop before “Back to School” deals.
  • Jewelry. Why July? Simple – it’s been a while since the last romantic holiday and the next event isn’t coming any time soon. There simply isn’t enough demand for jewelry in July forcing the stores to offer sparkling discounts.

August

Back to School Deals

August, the hottest month of the year, literally melts down the prices of some products and services. You’ll have Back to School, Labor Day, and the Tax-Free Weekend sales and you’ll get your hands on some pretty amazing wine deals to celebrate the final days of summer.

  • Office and school supplies. Backpacks, rulers, pens, notebooks – you name it, there will be an exclusive deal for it.
  • Shoes. Especially leather shoes and quality sneakers. They drop dramatically in price during August making room for new collections.
  • Everything taxfree. You don’t have to pay tax on a lot of stuff during the Tax-Free weekend. Why miss the chance?
  • Swimsuits. The swimming days are almost over. But who says you can’t buy one with a great discount and sore it for next year?

September

Travel Deals

September is the official month of airfare and iPhones. Well, maybe technically it isn’t, but it’s based on the deals that kick off the autumn season as it should.

  • iPhone deals. Autumn comes with the newer, bigger, better version of the iPhone plummeting the prices of earlier models. Feel free to pick one up if you are interested in quality hardware and software over the “trendiness” of the model.
  • Airfare. September is the perfect month for those of you planning a trip for the winter holidays.

October

Halloween Deals

October is a relatively quiet month for discount shoppers. All major retailers and manufacturers are holding off their best for the upcoming Black Friday sales and everyone else operates in “business as usual” mode.

That said, there are still things with yellow and red price tags on them, like:

  • Jeans. All the fuss about new collections has worn off by now so there’s no need to pay top dollar for a pair of jeans anymore.
  • Bikes. The warm days are over. It’s just not comfortable to get from point A to point B on two wheels anymore. Or is it?
  • Camping gear. It’s getting colder and colder with every day that passes by, so fewer Americans show any desire of exploring the wilderness, forcing camping gear sellers to drop their prices for the time being.
  • Halloween deals. You do need to prepare your household for the upcoming invasion of zombies and vampires, don’t you? These stores will provide you everything you need at super affordable prices.

November

Electronics Deals

Ah, the royal month of earthshattering deals and jaw-dropping discounts. We won’t be focusing too much on it, because you already know the drill:

  • Black Friday is perfect for smart Christmas shopping, tech purchases, getting your hands on some home utilities, and basically everything else that comes up to your mind.
  • Cyber Monday is perfect for all things high-tech and digital. Now, is the perfect time to get your favorite TV model at a discounted price!
  • Thanksgiving Day deals combine the above and add an impressive assortment of tools and home appliances discounts.

PS: In case you’ve missed it, in all of your shopping fuss, the National Sandwich Day and Veteran’s Day are in November – some of the best days of the year to get free stuff!

December

Car Deals

Hey, we are back to the Holiday Season. Hurrah!

  • Christmas products. Obviously, toys, sweets, and Christmas decorations are all the rage in December, and they come with surprisingly good deals. You’ll have to plan your shopping in advance though, as a lot of the offers are either limited or time-sensitive.
Why? Because a brand will either sell Christmas-themed stuff before Boxing Day, or they’ll be gathering dust on the shelves for the next year.
  • Cars. Cars are also cheaper in December, especially at the end of the month. This happens because the dealers have quotas that can be broken down into monthly, quarterly, and yearly sales goals. The longer you wait, the more desperate they’ll be if they want that sweet new year’s bonus.

Now that we’ve walked through the best deals of the year, you know that there is something for everyone out there, and that particular “something” doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg if you are patient enough.

Any thoughts?
