How to Save Money at Amazon
Written by Irina Vasilescu

Founded in July 1994, or simply Amazon has become a one-stop-shop for those who are shopping for almost anything under the sun. The headquarters of, Inc. is in Seattle, Washington and they are currently considered as the largest online retailer in the world.

Whether you’re looking for an MP3 download, streaming movie, software, books, apparel, furniture, gadgets, jewelry or consumer electronics, you are bound to find what you need on the site.

What’s good about using the services of a site like is that there is no need for you to drive to the supermarket or the mall to get what you need.

When you browse through the website, you will see all the information you need about a product: its price, product specifications, description, editorial reviews, product details, customer reviews and similar items from the same category. Should you decide to push through with the purchase, you simply need to add the item to your shopping cart, pay and wait for it to be delivered straight to your doorstep.

12 Ways to Save Money on Amazon

Another good thing about shopping at the world’s largest online retailer is that there are plenty of deals that you can take advantage of. No matter which product it is that you wish to purchase, you can find ways to slash the price or save on shipping so that you can get the best deal possible.

Here, we will take a look at the top 12 ways that you can save money when shopping at

1. Take at least 20 seconds to check on the price of the goods elsewhere

Okay, this tip may sound counterproductive because the list is for the top ways to save money on But remember that if you would like to be a wise consumer, there are other websites out there that you can check – even just for the purpose of price comparison.

Let’s say that you are looking for a kitchen tool. Check out the price at, but also do visit other sites where you can buy the same item from.

Aside from other online shops, you can also check the main website of the manufacturer. Typically, they should offer better rates than the online retailers.

If you can save even one or two dollars by buying from another site, that’s already a great deal. However, it also does pay to consider the shipping costs.

If you need to buy other items from and you would like to save on shipping, you may want to skip checking out the price of the same item from other websites. You can also use shopping robots like the one from, a tool which auto-searches the best prices for each product category.

2. Sign up for newsletter websites to get discounts and freebies on e-books

If you have Amazon’s Kindle or any other brand of e-book reader, you can check out sites like and the site of Amazon itself. Sign up for newsletters so that you can be alerted when there are freebies and discounts on e-books., for example, sends out regular e-mail alerts on great deals for e-books and audiobooks which can be downloaded from the Amazon site.

3. Use the Amazon discount pages tool

When you visit sites like, you can download tools that will help you get great discounts at Amazon. This particular tool from the site creates a specific Amazon web link to display excellent bargains that you would otherwise not have access to. You can also choose discounts and free delivery options, which will slash the total price you’d have to pay even more.

4. Familiarize yourself with techniques on getting free delivery

Depending on where you’re from, Amazon has a minimum amount that you need to spend before you can get free delivery. There are ways to go around this although it does take a bit of effort. Again, you can use sites like to get dibs on how you can get free delivery when buying items from the site.

5. Tick the ‘Super Saver Delivery’ box upon checkout

Another shipping-related tip that you should keep in mind when shopping at is to always tick the “Super Saver Delivery” box upon checkout.

Although the site does list free delivery on some products, the default option is one to two days first class delivery. If you’re not in a hurry, you can save a few bucks by choosing the appropriate option upon checkout.

6. Get free Amazon vouchers using your credit card

Do you always charge your online purchases on your credit card? If yes, you may want to take advantage of something like cashback credit cards which allow you to earn points or qualify for discounts whenever you use the card for payment. Different credit card providers have varying policies for cashback points, however, so make sure to read the fine print.

You can use this perk alongside earning charity funds. When you purchase an item from, there is a special link which allows you to donate to charitable institutions. For every purchase, Amazon pays the charity 5% of your total purchase amount in cash. When doing this, make sure to click the charity option before adding items on your shopping cart. Otherwise, the institution will not receive the money.

7. Students can get 5 to 10% off on clothes

If you have a National Union of Students Extra card, you can get anywhere from 5 to 10% off on clothes, books, music, DVDs, beauty and home products. Once you log in to the NUS website, there’s a promotional code that you can paste into the gift voucher code box of Amazon. The code is actually reusable and is valid for 12 months, so that’s a great deal for students.

8. Check out the Warehouse Deals section

There are some items which you can get for great discounts but the items are open-box, near-date, slightly damaged or refurbished. If you don’t mind a slight scratch on an air conditioning unit, for example, visit the Warehouse Deals section of Amazon so you can purchase one without paying full price for it.

Aside from the slight surface damage or the open box condition of the product, it should be in 100% perfect working order so you can save a great deal. To make things even better, you can look for products which fall under the Free Super Saver Shipping category.

9. Get Daily Digital Deals

There are actually many hidden sections in where you can get lots of perks as a buyer. One such link is the Digital Deals page where you can view great offers on items while also earning freebies. The good news is that the perks are not just run-of-the-mill items that will just be gathering dust in your home once delivered.

The freebies take the form of free apps, song downloads, e-books and more. These digital products are a great companion to the main item that you wish to buy, so check out the Digital Deals page regularly.

10. Sign up for “Subscribe and Save”

When you’re stocking up on household maintenance items, do you usually buy them from Amazon? If yes, you should definitely sign up for the Subscribe and Save deal offered by the site. Through it, you can schedule recurring deliveries where you will receive an extra 15% off the purchase price. Not only that, but signing up for the service also gives you other perks like free shipping.

11. Buy used instead of brand new

When you visit the products description page of certain items from Amazon, you will typically see a section which indicates how many new and used items are available. If you are looking for a copy of Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, for example, you will see what the price is for new and used books.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong in buying a second hand book – in fact, the discounted price is a good incentive as any. So instead of purchasing a brand new copy of the book, you can purchase a second hand copy for an excellent price.

How does this work and where do the used products come from? Amazon actually allows private sellers to post their used items up for sale – which is why you see them listed alongside the new items. If there’s a number next to the ‘Used’ category, there is a seller who has posted a used item up for sale.

12. Take advantage of Amazon’s Lightning Deals promo

Finally, you can take advantage of the site’s Lightning Deals promotion where you can get extra coupon savings on featured items. However, they are only available for four hours or until all the coupons are used. If you have lightning-fast hands, you can get a hold of discounted items from the site.

To access the deal, check on the “Today’s Deals” link at the top of the Amazon page you are in. Click on the Gold Box from the menu, then the option for the Top Lightning Deal should appear on the right corner of the page. Whatever items are listed are up for grabs at discounted prices, but for a limited time only.

Which among these Amazon discount techniques will you be using from now on?

  • So many good tips, I never really thought about all of these ways to save money at Amazon. i have signed up for the newsletter and will be looking out for some deals, thanks.

  • I enjoy buying on Amazon but I never really checked out the warehouse deals. I am definitely going to check that. It always feels good to get a bargain. LOL

    • I’ve never checked the warehouse deals before either. I didn’t even know that was a thing. I’ll have to look into it next time I order off Amazon and see if I can get a good deal. I love a good bargain.

  • A mix between Amazon and eBay is the best way to save money. I’ve saved a lot of money by getting a product at half retail price on there. I remember that Amazon has some pretty good deals one those amazing Bic pens. Something like 50 for $3, which is way less than you’d have to pay in store. Finding deals like that can save you quite a bit of money in the long run.

  • I usually look on eBay, local classifieds, then Amazon, simply because buying physical items and getting them shipped to Australia seems more expensive than the actual product most of the time. However, you could apply said knowledge to your overall online shopping experience, because you’ll more than likely save a fair bit of money if you look around before making a purchase.

  • Amazon almost always used to be a better price, but now that’s not always the case! Make sure you just do a quick google to check around. A few minutes of a quick copy and paste search can save you a few bucks.

    • I do the same thing. I prefer Amazon, but if I can find a cheaper deal then I will shop on another site. It doesn’t take very long to check and see what the best site is.

  • Hey I really love number 3! Thanks for that tip. I never knew Amazon has that kind of thing going on I’m sure to take advantage of that on my next purchase. Also I think if you look for other sites with better prices you’ll find one but they’re bound to get you with the shipping costs and all that other extra taxes so be careful with that.

  • I usually go to Amazon for my digital downloads since I dont think they have a local office in our place, and shipping will be too much. I agree with the super saver option, if in case your not in ahurry, just choose the lower price option that two day delivery. Also, plan your purchases, if it wont hurt that you can get most of the items with 1-2 sellers, go and do it. Shipping cost is a lot and purchasing from different stores will definitely add a lot to your spendings.

  • I absolutely LOVE Amazon. I probably do 90% of my online shopping through them. As a stay at home mom I have tried everything I can to save money and I love that there is such a wide variety of sellers on this one site that I can choose from. Also, if you are really savvy and you have the time, there are sites online that will trade you a bit of time and effort for Amazon gift card codes ( yes I use these) and because Amazon lets you accumulate card codes like a piggy bank I will save all of my money till the end of the year and save myself a TON on holiday gifts.

  • I thought I was pretty savvy, but I did not know about I will be on there checking things out before I make another amazon purchase. That sounds like an incredible resource. I already have the rewards card and like to group my purchases so I can get free shipping, but extra savings are always good.

  • Amazon is such an awesome site! I also recommend becoming a part of a few rewards sites and survey panels – a lot of them have the option to pay you in Amazon gift card codes — which are awesome because they stack and do not expire.

  • Wow, thanks for all these tips! I’ve always found Amazon to be a great website to buy things online, especially books. I’ve never heard of warehouse deals and I look forward to trying it out.

I would also like to ask for your opinion on Amazon Prime. Apparently, you get free shipping and many other perks as well, such as being able to watch certain TV shows as they’re released. Has anybody used this before? Is it worth getting it?

  • I’m no longer positive where you are getting your info, but
good topic. I needs to spend some time studying more or working ouut more.

Thank you ffor great information I was searching for
    this info for my mission.

  • Thaanks for any other excellent post. Where eelse may just anyone get that type of information in suuch an ideal method of writing?
I have a presentation next week, andd I am on the search for such info.
