Reading newspapers and magazines is one of the best things to do with your time, especially if they provide high quality information. Taking into consideration the large number of people who nowadays read both the paper version of their favorite newspapers and the digital/eBook one, we can fairly say that newspapers are still quite popular out there.

Believe it or not, a newspaper can change your life and it can help you motivate and inspire yourself.  What are the top 10 great newspapers that will turn your life around though? Read on and find out more.

This is one of the very best newspapers in the United States of America – and one of the best in the world too. The best thing about the New York Times is related to the fact that it is just as eclectic as the city in which it was born. Thus, you can expect to find information here on anything ranging from books to theater and from the latest bits of news to the best lifestyle tips as well.

You can find the New York Times in paper version, you can find most of their articles on their website and, if you want to, you can make a digital subscription to their electronic newspaper too. How will it change your life? By making you more informed, by providing you with the best tips on what is happening in New York City and by providing you with the best information on a variety of lifestyle-related topics (from food to travel).

Resembling The New York Times very closely, the Washington Post follows the same main ideas as its NYC “cousin”. However, taking into consideration the fact that it is set in the capital city of the world, you can expect to see slightly different approaches on current affairs. Even if you are not a fan of the newspaper, it is still worth reading it – a last for the sake of diversity and of trying to understand multiple points of view if not for any other reason.

Quite similar to the New York Times (and to Washington Post as well), the USA Today is the best “cousin” of the aforementioned newspaper – but at a national scale. This newspaper includes news from the USA and from around the world and, aside from the latest pieces of news, it also includes a variety of articles on a wide range of topics (from bestselling books to travel and from apps to information on stocks. Again, the newspaper is available in multiple formats and although it may not turn your life upside down as such, it will definitely help you understand the world around you in a better way.

You don’t have to work on Wall Street to read The Wall Street Journal. In fact, you don’t even have to work in the broader field of finances to read The Wall Street Journal. Considering the fact that much of the American economy is happening on Wall Street, everyone should have the right to be informed on what is actually going on there (and the 2008 economic crisis is probably a very good example of how things can go terribly wrong there).

Again, The Wall Street Journal can be found in all versions (paper, digital) and it will provide you with life-changing information that will be helpful (and interesting) for just about anyone out there.

If you are searching for a business newspaper to provide you with useful information in everything business-related (from entrepreneurship and leadership to marketing and finance), Entrepreneur is precisely what you need. There’s a huge amount of information available in this newspaper and it can all be life-changing, especially for those of you trying to start and grow your own businesses.

No matter what field you want your business to be set it, rest assured that you will find tons of information in the Entrepreneur. Check out with their offline and online versions as well and you will surely learn new, interesting and very helpful things that will change your life.

If you want to be informed and if you want to be able to approach current issues from as many angles as possible, make sure you read newspapers from abroad as well. Daily Telegraph is one of the very best newspapers in Great Britain and it will surely provide you with the bird’s eye view necessary to understand current news as in-depth as possible.

The Daily Telegraph will provide you information both about Great Britain and Europe and about the rest of the world as well. If you feel that subscribing to a foreign newspaper may be over your budget, you can, of course, check out with their online version because there you will find the most important items of news they publish in the newspaper. Overall, The Daily Telegraph may not change your life overnight, but it will surely help you become a more properly informed person.

Another British newspaper, The Sun is probably one of the most famous names in the world of mass-media. Same as in the case of the aforementioned British newspaper, The Sun will provide you with a better insight into things and reading it will help you understand complex issues from multiple points of view so that you can form a fact-based opinion on certain matters of interest in the world. The Sun is available online and it is one of the most well-read newspapers in the world so it will definitely not hurt throwing a look at it the next time you do your newspaper reading.

Alright, we know most of you don’t actually speak Japanese, but, as mentioned before, reading newspapers from all around the world will help you gain in-depth knowledge over what is going on out there. Asahi Shimbun is one of the most popular worldwide newspapers and one of the best in Japan – and the good news is that you don’t have to speak Japanese in order to be able to read it because they have released an online English version too.

Taking the time to read this newspaper will help you understand the differences in how different countries see and react to different situations of global interest. Even more than that, reading a Japanese newspaper will surely help you understand the Japanese society, culture and politics much better – and giving that Japan is one of the most interesting countries in the world, you will surely love that.

Moving to another part of Asia, The Times of India has a newspaper format similar to that of other “The Times” newspapers around the world. While you may not be directly influenced by what is going on at the other end of the planet, in India, you can definitely take a look at this newspaper, at least every once in a while if not on a daily basis. Again, it will help you understand the world in which we live in and it will help you understand Indian politics and culture as well. So, at the very least, it will be an interesting read!

China is one of the leading powers in the world and reading a Chinese newspaper in English will surely provide you with a great insight not only into an economy that is extremely fruitful, but also into a culture that is unique and fascinating as well. Shanghai Daily is written in English and you can find it online too – so there should be no issue whatsoever in gaining access to the information. Also, it contains news both from China and from around the world and this will help you understand better how the Chinese see certain issues.

Read a newspaper (or at least shuffle through one) every single day and you will be a much more informed person – which will help you understand the world around us better as well. If you have a tablet or a smartphone, there are tons of newspapers you can gain access to for very low prices (or even completely for free) and wherever you are (at work during your coffee break, over breakfast, in the subway on your way back home and so on).

We need to start understanding each other much better as nations of the world and as representatives of humanity in general. And it all begins with having the right information in our hands. It all begins with trying to understand that people can have different opinions without fighting over it.

Reading newspapers (and, even more than that, reading newspapers from around the world) will help you understand everyone much better and it will give you a good insight into the differences that make us unique as nations, as well as into the things that make us all resemble each other as human beings.

  • One of my favorite newspapers is The New York Times just because it has a lot of great stories in it that I am interested in. I really like that they offer the digital version as well. So many local papers simply offer the paper version, which is a lot harder to manage and it just clutters the house.

  • I’m a big fan of both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. I’d have to recommend both newspapers and their websites to readers in the United States. You can get tons of informative news and useful information through these papers, although they aren’t the cheapest things in the world. You’ll get more than your money’s worth, though.

  • I read most of these newspapers online on their respective portals. I even have subscriptions and RSS feeds on most of these. I also regularly read from international prints like Asahi Shinbun because they offer a different perspective on stories–sort of an east meets west thing.

    • I like online portals for newspapers, but every so often I feel like going the traditional route and reading an actual newspaper. It’s a little backwards since all the same information is available online, but whatever. I’ve read a few international newspapers myself, and some of them are far superior to others!

  • You are correct about The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washing Post, Britain’s The Daily Telegraph. They have left a stinging stigma with me in their handling of news reportage– reflective of biases in the media differentiating facts from truth. Differentiating ‘objective’ from highly structured reporting. For decades, for example, demonization of Israel has become the ‘state of the day world news’. The New York Times is, at its best, keen on that. Just my views.

I am hopeful that professional journalists would believe in speaking truth for what it is with honest reporting. That would, indeed, be many lives and be a world-turning upside down.
