  • I love that Mark Zuckerburg is just a normal looking guy that doesn’t like spending that much money. Sure, he’s rich and probably spends tons of money, but he doesn’t waste money on fancy looking clothing when he just wants to dress and act like a mostly normal guy. That’s how most celebrities and famous figures should be. No need to dress up and look all formal. Life doesn’t need to be that serious.

    • Hah I think that Mark Zuckerburg pretty much has an image to maintain now, of not caring about his appearance. Then again, it’s a pretty conventional trait among the tech saavy crowd in Silicon Valley.

For the average person, lifestyle inflation is extremely difficult to avoid when you come in to a large sum of money. Even just a small raise will see people splurging on new vehicles or upsizing their living arrangements.

    • I agree. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

I think this is something all of us “normal” people appreciate in celebs because it allows us to relate to them. But on the other hand, it’s kind of none of our business, it’s their earned money.

Most people would go on ridiculos spending sprees if they had the kind of money celebs have. There’s nothing really WRONG with it, my guess is just that people are jealous mostly.

  • I knew some of these stars were frugal but not all. I guess you could say I am similar to Carrie Underwood, I think twice or sometimes more than twice before I make a purchase and I do not buy expensive clothes. Dave Grohl has no high school diploma? Wow I can understand why he is saving then just in case.

    • With Dave Grohl’s level of talent, he doesn’t need the high school diploma! ;] I know plenty of people that didn’t graduate high school yet spend far more money than they should relative to their own income, though. Grohl is just an all-around smart and nice guy, as far as I’m concerned.

  • I think when people imagine celebrities, they think of these emotionally unbalanced people with no life skills and assistants to cater to their every whim. While I think a large proportion of them may be like this, there has to be a sizable portion (as shown by this list) that were raised with decent guidance and learned some life skills just like any “normal” person.

  • This was definitely an article worth reading. It’s nice to know that even people who have all the money in the world find ways to be more conscious about their spending. It never pays to just throw away money — and for some of them – it gives them more money to donate to their favorite charities.

    • A lot of celebrities do indeed donate to charities and even invest their time. In fact, I’d say far more celebrities truly believe in the causes they support rather than just doing it for the positive PR. If someone wants to spend their money frivolously, then fine – they earned it, but I like seeing the celebrities that splurge here and there but still offer money and time to charities.

  • I notice that some of my favorite celebrities are here and no wonder i love them so much, they are down to earth individuals. I love this about them, the way that they are talented to the point that have you wondering if they are set in their particular roles…it is amazing. When i look at the earnings, i could not help but become ‘wide jawed’ as they are earning so much, they could do just about any thing they choose to. They choose to be normal and act as if they are human beings and not frighten at the sight or thought of earning millions. It is without a doubt the reason why they have maintained their stature in the business and continues to be at the top of their game…i just love them so.

  • I always joke that if I were a celebrity, I’d be saving my money instead of splurging on everything I can. (Who needs three houses anyway?) Articles like this are so fun — and it’s really fun when frugal celebrities share fashion tips or things like that since, given they have an image to maintain, it’s a surefire way to copy some really nice style without breaking the bank.

  • I’m not really surprised that Dave Grohl is frugal. After all, he’s seen first hand the effects that the celebrity lifestyle can have on a person. Although, to be honest, he doesn’t really need a high school diploma really, does he? I’m sure he could walk into any guitar shop and be hired on the spot!

  • Stars after my own heart! I love to see how many of them clip coupons — and I loved a lot of them as actors and actresses before, but now my fondness for them grew more. Tobey Maguire’s claim is pretty legit — better to be an actor who can choose his roles and choose to not play anymore, than one who has to sell out in any movie they throw your way and all.

  • I can really understand these celebrities’ need to be frugal even more than us average folk. They need to keep their privacy, so need to pay huge amounts of money to do just the basic things we take for granted. Like they can’t just go buy a house down the street. They need to be in a exclusive, sheltered property, they need to travel with body guards and take private planes, they can’t just eat on the corner at Chili’s… everything costs more for them to do to keep their security. And they will always be famous, however their income might not last. So I really respect their ability to be frugal given the large amounts of money they are dealing with.
