Labor Day Sales FAQs
When Do Labor Day Sales Start?
Labor Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Monday in September. This year’s Labor Day falls on September 4. It’s become a common practice among many retailers to have an early start when it comes to offering Labor Day sales. Some brands started to roll out their offers a week or even two weeks before the actual holiday.
Still, there are still other brands that hold off their offers until a few days before Labor Day, with some of them rolling out sales during the Labor Day shopping weekend, which falls on a Friday, September 1.
But, how long do these sales usually last? Duration can vary greatly among retailers. Some sales can last until Labor Day itself, while others end the day after the holiday. Some retailers may even continue to offer deals through the holiday week. Note that while some sales may last longer, the selections of deals may become limited.
What Can You Expect from Labor Day Sales 2023?
You can expect to find a wide array of Labor Day deals on clothing, electronics, large appliances, patio furniture, grills, and mattresses. You can even find some generous offers that’ll let you save anywhere from 80% to $200.
Cleaning and Organizing Tools
Retailers, such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, and Target, are expected to roll out deals on cleaning and organizing tools, like vacuums, window cleaners, sponges, and organizational bins. You may find vacuums from brands, such as Dyson and Shark to be on sale.
Rugs, Furniture, and Mattresses
If you’re looking to save on rugs, décor, and mattresses, you can expect retailers, such as Rugs.com, and Tempur-Pedic, to mark down their beddings, pillows, and mattresses. For discounts on furniture, you can check out retailers, like Wayfair and Raymour & Flanigan. Target is expected to offer deals on nursery furniture.
Home Improvement Tools, Grills, and Outdoor Furniture
For home essentials and tools, Lowe’s is expected to have sales for power tools, lawnmowers, and lighting. Home Depot is also expected to launch deals on patio furniture and grills. You can also check Bed Bath & Beyond to spot affordable deals on gas grills and grill accessories.
Outdoor Gear and Other End-of-Season Deals
If you’re keen on shopping for end-of-the-season deals or seasonal merchandise, this is the perfect time to shop for summer clothing, outdoor toys, fitness essentials, and camping gear. Given that Labor Day signals the end of the back-to-school rush, some retailers may even markdown school supplies, such as backpacks and shoes.
More Savings for Educators
Labor Day also brings good news and more savings for teachers. Dollar General is offering teachers a special discount through their Teacher Appreciation Event. If you’re an educator, you’ll receive a coupon that you can use for purchases during the store’s Back-to-School promotion period. Use it to save money on essential school supplies, such as pens, pencils, and even shoes.
What to Buy During Labor Day Sales?
👍🏻 Mattresses and Beddings
Get the restful sleep you deserve with a new mattress. Sink into an ultra-comfy mattress from Bear Mattress, Leesa, Helix Sleep, or Casper. These stores offer a wide range of offers, such as 15% off on select mattresses and freebies.
If you simply want to upgrade the look and feel of your bedroom without having to spend a lot of money on a new mattress, you can opt to get new bedding. Brooklyn Bedding and Nest Bedding are providing up to 30% off their bedding and linens.
👍🏻 Outdoor Furniture and Grills
The Labor Day holiday is one of the best times to spruce up your backyard or patio. Enjoy as much as 50% off on select grills from Bed Bath & Beyond and Ace Hardware. Meanwhile, you can look forward to discounts of up to 70% off on outdoor furniture and accessories from Target, Lowe’s, and Wayfair.
👍🏻 Skincare and Clothing
Now, if you’re looking to splurge on makeup and skincare, brands and retailers, such as ULTA Beauty, and Macy’s, have you covered. If you want to update your wardrobe, you can score deals from retailers, such as Backcountry, Keen Footwear, and Old Navy. They may offer discounts from 20% to 80%.
👍🏻 Personal or Back-to-School Tech
When it comes to tech and electronics, you may want to wait for better deals during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But if you can’t wait to purchase new gadgets, Labor Day can also be a good time to look at laptops, headphones, and smartphones. HP and Dell are expected to offer deals on various laptop models. You can also check out Best Buy to see if they have any deals on personal tech.
👍🏻 Appliances
While you may be able to score better deals on appliances during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Labor Day sales can also prove to be a good time to shop for discounted home appliances. Manufacturers are rolling out new appliances around September and October. Old appliances will be put on sale to make way for these new models. Expect to see discounts of up to 40% or up to $500 from Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Best Buy.
What to Skip During Labor Day Sales?
👎🏻 Halloween Décor and Fall Apparel
For starters, refrain from purchasing Halloween decorations and fall apparel, as these items are usually discounted around October.
👎🏻 Fall Footwear and Jewelry
Some other things to avoid buying include fall footwear and jewelry. While you can find deals on footwear from retailers, such as Nordstrom and Everlane, it may be best to wait it out until you see winter apparel lines on display. Yes, the 30% discount can be tempting, but if you wait a bit longer to buy fall footwear, you;ll be rewarded with more generous discounts of up to 50% off.
Given that jewelers have a tendency to replenish their stocks in October, you might not see a lot of offers for jewelry in September. So, when’s the best time to shop for new accessories? When it comes to jewelry, you can expect to find bigger discounts around Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
👎🏻 Video Games and Toys
You’d be able to see video games, consoles, and toys on a number of Labor Day sales, but it might be best to wait for Black Friday or Cyber Monday. You’d be more likely to get rewarded with more savings on these items during the holiday shopping season. Some retailers may even offer consoles and video games as a bundle or throw in some freebies during this season.
👎🏻 Televisions
While retailers, such as Best Buy, will be offering discounts of up to $500 for OLED TVs or HDTVs, it’s best to wait until November to December before you purchase a new TV. You’ll start to see better deals around early November and on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Aside from televisions, you may also want to see if there are better offers on home theater systems and DSLR cameras.
👎🏻 Approach with Caution: Cars
During this period, you might come across competitive offers on a range of car models as a number of retailers are looking to sell off their old inventory. There are also several car manufacturers, such as Honda, Hyundai, and Nissan, that offer affordable financing schemes and cashback offers.
If you’re thinking of buying cars during this holiday, it’s best to approach these offers with caution. While retailers do offer an array of discounts during Labor Day sales, you might still want to wait for more generous deals that may crop up during other times of the year.
